NEVADA MAP
  Map - Nevada Commission
  on Tourism

Knock the dust of your chaps, cinch up your saddle and put on your spurs because we're getting ready to ride into the very pages of history through Nevada's exciting Pony Express Territory. Most of the tour across the territory will roughly parallel the route brave Pony Express riders took across the wild and untamed Nevada landscape. Travel will take place along Highway 50, dubbed by LIFE magazine as "The Loneliest Road In America."

The towns of Fernley, Silver Springs, Fallon, Austin, Eureka and Baker take the visitor on a trip filled with the farming, ranching and mining history of this part of the state. State parks offer history and outdoor activities while wildlife management areas showcase animal residents. Pony Express Territory's newest treasure is Great Basin National Park, more than 77,100 pristine acres of Nevada wilderness. Its centerpiece is Wheeler Peak, thrusting 10,063 feet into the clear blue Nevada sky. Every journey through Pony Express Territory is exciting and fun. Come visit very soon!

The Great Basin Heritage Route tells the stories of the central portion of the American Great Basin, which includes White Pine County, Nevada and Millard County, Utah, through our website, maps and programs. These stories are nationally significant, and include the history of  mining, ranching, and farming lifeways, highlighted by the still operating Nevada Northern Railway, Great Basin National Park, and the Topaz World War II Japanese Internment Camp in Delta, Utah.

Nevada Northern Railway East Ely Shops and Yard, National Historic Landmark, Ely

It is the last of its kind, the sole survivor of a grand era in the Silver State. Now a National Historic Landmark, The Nevada Northern Railway is considered the best preserved historic railroad in the country. The museum grounds are open year round except on Tuesdays. Excursion trains powered by our historic diesel locomotives operate from April through January.

This 56-acre complex includes 63 buildings and structures, the oldest built in 1906. The museum collection consists of three original steam locomotives, six diesel locomotives and over sixty pieces of original rolling stock with the oldest dating back to 1872. The museum also houses an extensive paper record of the railroad. The museum is unique in that it not only preserves the artifacts of the railroad but it also is working the preserve the knowledge necessary for the maintenance and the operation of the artifacts. The museum is doing this by developing training programs centered on our century old pieces of equipment and buildings. The skills and knowledge necessary to understand the obsolete technology are starting to become lost.

The East Ely Railroad Depot Museum is located within one of the nation’s most complete historic railroad yards. The depot has been restored to its original 1907 appearance. The museum, grounds, and shops remain hauntingly unchanged. Buildings, including the carpenter and electrical shops remain as they were left when the railroad closed in 1983. The pipefitters shop and blacksmith shop that surround the museum help tell the story of a proud time when Ely, and the railroad, helped “light a nation.” Museum hours are 8:30 to 4:30 daily. Closed Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Years. The museum is one of seven operated within the Department of Cultural Affairs.
